Gaskets can be used to perform many different functions. On a very general level,a gasket might be defined as a flexible component that sits in-between two or more mating surfaces,generally to prevent leakage from or into the joined objects while under compression.
Gaskets allow for "less-than-perfect" mating surfaces on machine parts where they can fill irregularities. Gaskets are commonly made of a flexible material such as rubber, paper, or cork. In fact, there are many different materials that gaskets can be made out of.
The most common use of a gasket is as a component of a sealing system, in which one of the major functions of the gasket is to create a seal between two other surfaces.
It is important that the gasket allows for essential maintenance, by allowing the sealing surfaces to be separated and reassembled. For this reason, it is important for the gasket to remains in a good a condition for as long as possible. The life of a gasket can be significantly improved by selecting the right material for the application, and by taking into account all of the features of the environment in which it will be used.
