Hello again! Today I'm going to talk some more about those little things that separate the luxury cars from the wannabes. These are the corners that the Toyotas-in-tuxedos from the true top of the line. I've seen both sides of this from the inside. Some companies look for every touch-point the customer will have and focus on making those excel while others focus more on finding areas to cut costs. Today I'm going to talk about the belt-line molding. For those who have not spend years designing these parts for OEMs, this is part of your door below the window. It's usually rubbery, shiny black, or bright metal. The bright metal is used both to make the car look expensive and is also an important design feature. Designers and stylists love to use these to create a distinct look from a distance and hate nothing more than when they are interrupted by a break in the visual.The cheapest way to make these things is to extrude them out in their section. For non-engineers, think of those Play-doh toys where you jammed it in one side, pressed down on the level, and forced the "doh" out of a star-shaped hole. It's the same basic principal, but with metal or rubber instead. Next, they take the long strip of formed metal, trim it to length and add a cap to it. Here's another place for OEMs to cut costs. Some will make sure that the cap on the end matches the bright metal, while others just settle for a cheaper black.
