With an automatic transmission, a gear shift or shifter cable is required to actuate the gear shifting lever and the transmission. The transmission shifting is accomplished by a gear shift cable which puts the vehicle in Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive positions through a lever mounted on the steering column or a gear shifter near the center console.

There are a few types of gear shift cables aka gear change cables or transmission shift cables. In most vehicles with manual transmission, gears are selected by manipulating a lever called a gear stick, shift stick, gearshift, gear lever, gear selector, or shifter connected to the transmission via these cables.
The shifter can be mounted on the floor, dashboard, or steering column. Moving the lever forward, backward, left, and right into specific positions selects particular gears and engages the gear shift cables.
There are left and right cables and they are used for the forward and the reverse gears. For instance, the Mitsubishi L300 uses a gear selector (gear change) cable, is 2.48m and goes with the shorter gear shift cable which is 2.00m long.
