A flex disc, also known as a giubo, is a flexible coupling used to transmit rotational torque between the drive shaft and the companion flange on mechanical devices, such as an automobile engine.
The flex disc is made from flexible synthetic rubber and is designed to allow some angular misalignment while reducing driveline vibration in mechanical power transmission applications.
Input and output shaft flanges are bolted to the flex disc on either side using alternating hole positions, so that the flanges are not connected directly to one another but instead only through the rubber material of the coupling. The elasticity of the rubber absorbs vibration and flexes for alignment. It follows that the rubber must withstand the application's full transmitted torque, for which reason the rubber is often reinforced internally using moulded-in fibre material.
Flex discs serve two functions on a car. They help to absorb excessive torsional loads applied to the driveshaft under hard acceleration and deceleration. They also isolate the driveshaft from vibration while still transferring power from the transmission to the differential. As your car ages, heat from the exhaust, oil, grease and other elements cause the flex discs to degrade.
In-between the transmission output shaft and the driveshaft, there is a flexible coupler that joins the two together. This rubber, reinforced coupler isolates vibration from the rest of the drivetrain, while transferring power from the engine and transmission to the rear differential and wheels.
A flex disc is a torsionally flexible rubber disc used on vehicles with rear-wheel drive to transmit torque from the transmission to the propeller shaft and from there to the rear-axle differential.
Flex disc wear is caused by strain as a result of:
Torque peaks due to sudden acceleration
Adjustment to axial distance variations
Adjustment to angular deviations
Compensation for parallel displacement
Humidity and other weather influences
